We're Not Just Acupuncture!

Unlike what most people think, Acupuncturists are not limited to just needles when it comes to treatment! There are some cases where no needles are even necessary!

Here is a list of other modalities that are used in conjunction with Acupuncture or by itself:

ACupuncture

Acupuncture is a complementary medical practice that entails stimulating certain points on the body, most often with a needle penetrating the skin, to alleviate pain or to help treat various health conditions. Developed millennia ago in China, numerous recent studies conducted by scientists in Europe and the United States have found that acupuncture is an effective method for treating bodily ailments.

Gua Sha

A smooth spoon or stone is lightly dragged over the skin which has been lubricated with a medium such as oil. It can be used to help get rid of the common cold as well as break up scar tissue and muscle adhesions.

Cupping:

Plastic or Glass cups are put over an injured area where suction is applied via a pump or heat source. The cups can be slid or can be in one spot for a few minutes. This raises the muscles and tissues upwards instead of down and also opens up the pores to let the body “vent out” pathogens. This practice is not limited to being found in Asia; all over Europe this has been done at home using shot glasses by older generations. Most commonly this technique is used for musculoskeletal issues.

Electric Stimulation

Also known as E-Stim for short, the handles of the needles are attached to a machine via alligator clips. When the machine is turned on, the electricity mimics the practitioner manipulating the needle at a very high rate. This can only be used with needles and is typically used for Acute and Chronic injuries or conditions that involved spastic muscles or scar tissue.

Magnet Therapy

The most recently developed modality on this list as well as the most complicated, plated magnets are placed over certain acupuncture points instead of needles. The most commonly seen usage in daily life is the magnetic bracelets used for jet lag and motion sickness. Under a practitioner, the magnets can be used in place of needles.

Moxibustion:

In Japan, this is a specialty in and of itself. Moxa is actually Mugwort leaf that is crushed and looks like Greenish-Brown cotton. There are many ways that this practice is done but the most common is known as Pole Moxa. The leaf is in a long, cigar shaped “pole” and is set aflame at the end. Once it is burning sufficiently, the pole is hovered over acupuncture points or an injured area to provide gentle, comforting warmth which is used depending on the case (most typically pain cases).

Tui Na

Often called “Chinese Massage” this is actually sophisticated bodywork that was developed and practiced by martial artists who used this system to heal one another after sparring or when someone was injured. It is a combination of massage and bone setting.

Ear Seeds

As the name implies, Ear Seeds are tiny black pellets that may be coated with herbs and are placed in the ear where they may sit and be stimulated for up to 3 days. This is almost always in conjunction with acupuncture and therefore treats a wide array of issues. The most common use for these is with patients suffering from chemotherapy and radiation side effects or people suffering from addiction.
